Keep an eye out for the latest issue of the Quarterly, with "Shirley Veigel Clements: Nurse and Hospital Fire Heroine," on the cover! "The hospital in Effingham, Illinois, burned completely to the ground on the night of April 4, 1949. Effingham is the Effingham County seat, and at that time, it had a population of about 6,000 residents. At least 145 people were in the building when the fire was detected. Seventy-six of them died, making it, at that time, the worst hospital fire in the history of the United States." - Linda Ruholl.
