This month, the Illinois House of Representatives passed bipartisan legislation to create a 10-member Underground Railroad Task Force. This group will work on developing statewide projects to recognize Illinois' connection to the Underground Railroad prior to and during the Civil War. The Task Force will also expand the Underground Railroad Conductor Program, which honors Illinois Ancestors who helped escaped African American slaves find freedom. The Conductor Program was established in Tazewell County and is starting to spread throughout the state. The Task Force will certainly help Illinois family historians who have ancestors with connections to the Underground Railroad! Read more about the new Task Force HERE! The ISGS Office will be closed the week of June 5th. Office Manager Vauna will return on Tuesday, June 13th. © 2023, copyright Illinois State Genealogical Society
