ISGS Ancestor Photo Contest Winners

The Illinois State Genealogical Society is proud to announce the winners of its recent Ancestor Photo Contest held earlier this year.

Rotating Ancestor Slide Show Added to ISGS Website

There were 12 photos selected from the many images submitted by ISGS members and they are all available for viewing at the ISGS website. We’ve created a “rotating slide show” which will display two images when you click on a sidebar menu item.

In addition, place your mouse pointer over an image to learn more about the person or persons depicted and which ISGS member submitted the photo.

Family of Andrew West Lascelle and his wife Mary Harriet Miner, abt. 1887, possibly Dorr, McHenry County, Illinois. Submitted by Gordon W. Struve. 

Christian Kath (1812-1894) & Louisa Jess (1812-1849). They were both from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He was a weaver journey-man. They had 8 children, 2 of which emigrated to the U.S. and lived outside of Chicago in Niles, Cook County, Illinois. Submitted by Kim Kasprzyk.

Gemskie family of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, abt. 1915. Charles John Gemskie emigrated from Germany in 1869 and married widow, Margaret Shuetz DeWald in 1892. They resided on Larrabee St. and Ridge Avenue in Chicago with their 7 children and 2 stepchildren. This is my favorite photo of my mother, Gladys Gemskie and her little sister, Marie, daughters of Kate and George Gemskie of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Their father died in 1921, and in 1922 the girls were temporarily placed in Angel Guardian Home for Children. I believe the photo was taken while Gladys and Marie resided there, thus the uniformity in dress and hair. Is it any wonder that they both became hairdressers as young adult women? Austin Dwight Sturtevant. 1816-1897. First principal of the Dearborn School, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. My great-great grandfather, he arrived in Chicago in 1838 and was a teacher and the first principal of the Dearborn School and later was a police court magistrate in Chicago. Submitted by Susie Pope. 

George W. Witt was born on April 21, 1841 in Kane, Illinois. He was married three times and had 13 children. He was a farmer most of his life and served in the Illinois Legislature representing the 38th District from 1900 to 1906. He died at the home of his son-in-law, Dr. S. F. March, in Carrollton, Illinois on February 23, 1932. Submitted by Stephen Black.

Rudolph March was born in Kentucky on July 1, 1816 and moved to Greene County, Illinois in 1837. He married Martha Arnold on Nov 21, 1837 and they had 13 children. Three of his sons served in the Union Army in the Civil War and one was killed at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky in 1862. Rudolph was a farmer all his life and died on Dec 19, 1890 in Greene County, Illinois. Submitted by Stephen Black.

Glenwood Charles Scoville 20 Nov, 1937 Los Angeles, California; d. 25 Jan 1995 Normal, Illinois (my mother); Marjorie Lillian Brown, b. 6 Apr 1906 Oak Park, Illinois; m. Paul Taggart, d. 1979 Arizona; Josephine Joanne Ewing, b. 9 Apr 1909, m. Leland Sturtevant Brown, d. 1988, Glendale, California. Submitted by Susie Pope.

Albertina Inez Walton, b. 4 Dec 1874 Kalamazoo, Michigan; m. Frederick Gregg Scoville 6 Feb 1896 Kalamazoo, Michigan; d. 15 Jan 1957 Alta Loma, California (my paternal grandmother). Her parents were Eulas Law Walton and Mary Ann Galloway (Barton) Walton. Submitted by Susie Pope.

Photo of Bennis Berry Bradbury and wife Alice Pink (Ashbrook) Bradbury, taken about 1900, probably at Arcola, Douglas County, IL. Children: Glenia William B., Fannie Francis B., Maude B., Noah A. B., Ernest Frank B., Horton Troy B., Shirley Reason B., Alfred Farrell B., William Jacob B. Bennis with his older brother William Jacobs Bradbury were business partners, they operated a farming implement business, Bradbury Brothers in Arcola, IL. They sold farming equipment and supplies such as wagons, windmills, fencing materials, coal, lumber and insurance. Submitted by Larry Pepper.

Join Us for the 2012 Ancestor Photo Contest

Beginning in January 2012, we’ll hold another contest to solicit images of people and places related to Illinois genealogy. The images will appear on the website for one year, starting in July 2012.
